Vermeer

Vermeer was one of the Dutch painters from the 17th century and one of the painters that i most loved. Possibly in Indonesia not all that was known him if compared with Leonardo da Vinci, but in the international world, He is consider masters who was acknowledged. This is one of his paintings, not that was most popular but some that most I liked.

The title is A GIRL READING A LETTER BY AN OPEN WINDOW or in Dutch language Brieflezend Meisje bij het Venster. Made around the year 1657-1659.

Like the simple picture about a girl who read the letter but in fact had the more meaning . In the 17th century, the drafting of the letter or wrote letters in art was the symbol of the love. In other words this girl was reading the letter from the person who was loved, possibly the sweetheart or the husband. The drafting of the letter also was the symbol of the far away place. To clarify the intention to this painting, Vermeer in fact depicted an illustrated Cupid painting in the part that now is the hollow wall but afterwards he covered him with the paint. Possibly because he dont want the painting is too easy for be read.

Vermeer was the expert in creating the intimate situation. The green curtain available in this painting also had the function in order to leave the intimate impression, as though we carry out surveillance of secretly. This green curtain also had the impression as though the illusion of the depth and the perspective happening. The other function was for trompe l oeil or cheated eyes. the green Curtain eyes was made so that the person who saw him thinks the curtain was serious because in the 17th age the painting often was covered with the curtain and only was opened if having special occasion.
